Not Much At All....

What We Can See....

Once Again, Dear Readers, the RL Renovation project consumed almost all of my Time and even more of my energy this past weekend, leaving me with very little to show you! But I did manage to accomplish two very small things in my mini worlds, so here I will show you a great many pictures about not much at all! The first thing I did was to test a "lampshade" of sorts for the candle light sconces in the parlor of Hardwick Hall. I cut the end off of a metal filigree jewelry part and placed it over the bulb to see if it would mute the glaring light from the bare bulbs, but still cast enough light. You can see it above in the branches of the tree by the windows. I think it succeeds in muting the light, and casts more wonderful shadows on the ceiling, but the question remains about whether it leaves us with enough light in this room! This is a Dark room, and all the trees are supposed to be spooky and minimally lit... and I have always felt that the bare bulbs need a shade of some kind.

In this picture you can see the sconces over the mantel are also on, but without any shades, they are a bit more glaring and make it hard to see the other features of the room. (One of the difficult features of this room is that the fireplace wall is angled away from the open side of the room, making a direct view of the fireplace impossible except through the windows on the side wall.)

And here is that view from outside, at night, with the sconces on....
the light is dim but at the same time too bright to see past the glaring light bulbs!

And another view of the mantel from the open side of the house....
this is as much of it as can be seen from this side!
I think I am going to try the "lampshades" on all the sconces and see how it looks....
but I only had the time to make the one shade so far!

I do like the effect of the one "lampshade"
and I guess I will just have to wait and see
whether we can still see enough when they all have "shades"!

The other thing I accomplished last weekend, Dear Readers,
was to glue a couple of additional boards onto the bed frames
for the Cloud Palace Bear-Racks!

This is how it looked at the start of the weekend.....

And this is how it looked by the end of the weekend!
I think it makes the beds look much cozier!

This is a close-up of the lower bunk.....
there is a shelf for bearsonal items....

And here is the upper bunk.... there is a shelf here too,
but the picture is a bit too dark....!

Hamish Harry has come to inspect the bunks!

He has even found a temporary pad to give it a try!
(There will, of course, be proper mattresses and bedding soon...!)

I think Hamish Harry looks Happy with the accommodations!
But I still need to build the bed for the loft ....

Where Brother Beorn will have his own Bearsonal Working space...
He is very patient!

So, Dear Readers, between the Bear Racks and the sconces,
I think you can see
That there is not much to see at all!

  1. Hello Betsey,
I love the lighting over the trees. It really does create a spooky atmosphere. It is a dark room, but perhaps, if you feel you need more light, you could put in a light up fire or a candle on a table. I really like the darkness of the room. It reminds me of old Barbara Steel movies. The bunk beds are coming along beautifully. How lucky the bears are.
    Big hug,
    Giac

    1. Hi Giac! I think I am going to add an outlet that will allow me to have an extra light in there. But we do want to be able to have a spooky feeling too! This is modeled in part on my old house and it has no built-in lights! Just added electrical outlets once electricity became available.

  4. All things considered, you got lots done!
I don't know what to say about the lighting issue - perhaps a little Victorian gloom is just the thing!

    1. Hi Mom, yes, the Victorian gloom is exactly the effect I want! Not quite Charles Adams, but close!

  5. Good Morning Betsy, In my dotage I find my vision not as good as in the past. I cannot make out very well the lighting in the room, therefore it is gloomy which is what you desire.
Giac's suggestion of a fire makes great sense as it would bring in more light to view the interior better without changing the atmosphere.
The bear's box beds are coming along very well. Always fun to dress a bed!
I feel like Spring may be on the horizon. Someone bought snowdrops from their garden to share with the Garden Club last night.
    Take care.

    1. Hi Janine! I am sorry I am challenging your eyesight with these dark pictures! At this time of year I am always fighting the dark to get pictures.... it is really hard to get light and a camera into the small spaces at night! I am hoping it will be more visible when it is all finished. Spring still feels ages away over here.... snowdrops sound delightful! As for the bears beds... I am looking forward to dressing them!

    1. Hi Ewa! I like the mysterious effect too! Each small step makes it more like what I imagine... so there is hope it will look good when it is done! As for the bedding, for some reason I don't understand, it takes me forever to finish the beds! LOL!

  7. The room looks awesome with the tree lights on... but although they swallow a lot of the light the lampshades appear to be necessary to bundle the light. And I truly love the way the beds of the beary guys are developing... And what shall I say... I'm very curious now to see what kind of bearsonal stuff the guys will store on their bearsonal shelf! ;O)

    1. Hi Birgit! I love that expression "bundle the light"!!! It is exactly the idea for the shades! As for the Beary guys.... there will be some interesting things for their bearsonal shelves.... but no telling how soon they will get finished! LOL!

  9. Betsy, there's still lots to be seen on your blog ;)! The sconces/lampshade look wonderful, the effect IS really spooky whilst the room is minimally lit. The bunk beds for the bears are nice work, these bearsonalities seem quite pleased with the result.
Don't worry about having done not much at all......because just like Ewa: here it is the same :D!

    1. Hi Ilona! I guess we all go through times of getting very little done... I just feel as though it has been all year for me! LOL!
I am glad you like the spooky lights... we will see how they look when it is all done... but I am wanting that dark atmosphere!

    1. Thank you Monique! The RL renovations are going well, but it is a slow process! I am trying to squeeze in some mini work anyway so I don't feel too deprived!

  11. Hi Betsy - You may think you've accomplished little, but of course that's very relative; compare it to nothing, and it will seem as though you've done a lot. And what you have done looks very good; the filigree sconce shade is perfect. It mutes the light in an eerie way; the shadows it casts must be beautiful. It will be interesting to see how much light there is when you're all finished.
I agree with you that the bunk beds look much cozier with the added wood pieces. That was a good idea!

    1. Hi Marjorie! Yes, It is all relative.... and when I adjust my Expectations in line with the reality... then I feel a lot more productive! LOL! And it is often a good idea to "slow down" for a while and really look at what you are doing! I remember the little details that way! Thanks for commenting!

  12. Hi Betsy!

Love the lighting in the tree room. Great atmosphere! I'm thinking this would be a great place for the Fairy Queen and Himself, the Lord Warrior, to have a secret render-vous. Don't you agree? ; )

    1. Hi Vicky! Ha Ha.... they would be a bit "exposed" as there is no foliage... I somehow picture her Majesty always swathed in greenery and blossoms.... but then there are Dark Winter Nights.... but I imagine she would have a Crystal Cave somewhere....!
