More Teeny Tinies....

Not Done....

I had so Hoped I would have a competed set of furniture for the Next Room to show you, Dear Readers, but Alas, I got distracted by small Snags and Big indecisions and have Not completed most of what has been started! The Next room in the Secret Christmas House is the Sitting Room, on the middle floor above the Library, on the smaller side of the House. It is decorated in pale green striped wallpaper, and I had made minimal alterations to the ceiling of this room back in the Winter, only adding a central ceiling medallion painted white. I am trying to stick faithfully to the kits as instructed, but I find myself adding a few details and wanting to change others.

The furnishings for this room consist of an old cast iron parlor stove,
a round "Tea Table", two wing-back Easy Chairs
and a single small side chair.

The Wing back chairs were easy to assemble, as was the parlor stove.

There is a printed "fire" glued to the back of the stove.
It looks amazingly realistic!
The Tea Table, on the other hand,
was Not easy to assemble!

The pieces that you need to separate from the board
 are Teeeeeny-tiny and fragile!
And one leg needs to attach first to the Table top,
while the other three attach first to the stretcher piece....
with the feet facing in the right direction!
And then you somehow magically make the two halves go together
with glue involved in the right places and at the right angles.......
and all the pieces are too small to hold onto without tweezers...!
Whew... did it work?

Heavens, that is Tiny!
After that Dear Readers, the tiny chair is a piece of cake!

And then they need to be painted....
dark "wood" color for the table and chair.....

And "cloth" colored for the Wing back chairs!
And this is where I start to get into trouble....
They recommend a pale green cloth color to go with the wallpaper ...
(and the curtains which I have not added either!)
And they say there is only one way to achieve the effect of cloth on these chairs
and that is many Many MANY coats of paint!

I am starting with a white base color and just adding coat after coat.....

This is seven coats of paint so far.....
is it starting to look "soft" like cloth?
(Do remember to poke the pictures to enlarge them)
And on top of all those coats of paint,
I am wanting to make them a darker green color....
rather than the pale green they recommend.

And then they say to varnish all the wood painted pieces
with a "matte acrylic varnish"....
(which I don't have in my supplies....)

Before adding the printed "cloth" pieces to these.....
There is a lace cloth for the table and "cushions" for the chair.
I guess I will have to find some acrylic varnish
in order to finish all these tiny pieces of furniture.

So you can see, Dear Readers,
I am momentarily snagged  by lack of supplies
and decisions I still need to make.
The Teeny tiny furniture might not be All Done...
but it is ready and waiting
for many more coats of varnish and paint.
(Just how many is "many Many MANY?)

  1. I do not know how you do this. So tiny! My brain just won't work when I look at the furniture.

    1. Hi Sheila! I was a bit afraid at first... and you have to use little boxes to hold all the pieces while "under construction" to prevent them getting lost in the merest breezes! But it is fun to see them come together!

  2. I congratulate you on getting this far Betsy. It would have gone into a 'in progress' drawer, never to be seen again if I tried. Good luck :0)

    1. Hi Pepper! I really am enjoying the challenge! Finding missing pieces and not sneezing on WIP is a learned skill! LOL!

  3. Hi Betsy! I think you did a great job on this teeny tiny furniture, especially because you have to work with tweezers to pick them up and hold them. Yes indeed: how many is "many many many"???.....eeehhh I guess awhole lot of many's ;O! But I bet that you can achieve your goal and will make the chairs like they have a soft cloth on them! And I feel for you, because it's so annoying to be without the supplies you need, especially for this job. As for the matte varnish, it's not easy to find, or for sale here in The Netherlands.

    1. Hi Ilona! I am learning how to use tweezers in Both hands! LOL! It is a challenge, but the results are worth it... the tiny house is going to be so magical when it is all done! I have found the acrylic varnish on Amazon.... it is on it's way here now!

    1. Hi Jean-Claude! I do love Teeny-Tiny details in everything! It is a lot of fun to make these pieces, and even more fun to see if I can add anything to the kit! I have found the acrylic varnish and will not be stuck for long! :)

  5. Hello Betsy,
I would go simply mad if I ever had to work in such a small scale. The table may have been a beast, but it was well worth it in the end because it is just beautiful. I think the paint on the chairs might work. I do hope you get the material you need soon...I hate waiting after material. I can't wait to see more of this beautifully finished project.
    Big hug

    1. Hi Giac! I am loving these tiny pieces of furniture because the laser cutting makes them so precise and detailed! It is impossible to imagine trying without the laser kits.... although I still love my Teeny Settee in the Folly Roombox the best! :)I am having fun!

  6. No time for much of a comment - Pat is lurking with his breakfast ready. Only to remark on your incredible patience - many many MANY coats of paint? How long do the coats take to dry? Yikes!

    1. Hi Mom! I applied layers while also working on the mural in my RL kitchen, so I wasn't timing it... but waiting for paint to dry is one of the reasons I go off on tangents... another project always beckons...!

  8. Betsy these are just precious and I am so excited to see how they finish up for you! I have a bedroom and dining table kit from SDK in 144th scale and they will be my first. I have avoided doing them because I am afraid I'll ruin and/or lose the pieces. Your posts are giving me both the confidence and temptation to try - thank you! Maybe the Christmas house will have a furnished dollhouse after all!

    1. Hi Jodi! I was afraid to try.... until I decided to make a "roombox" for my 1:12 scale Folly... and discovered how much fun the Teeny-tinies are! I have been hooked ever since and have a whole pile of "projects" in this scale.... fortunately they don't take up too much room! LOL! I do use little boxes to organize the projects.... and don't ever ever sneeze!!!

  9. Your efforts are paying off in SPADES, Betsy dear! The arm chairs are indeed "softening" and the tiny tea table is ADORABLE! But I don't believe you when you say that you are trying to stick to the directions as is. I am already seeing a teeny tiny tea cup and saucer on the itty bitty table with a minuscule tea service in your insey wincey green striped parlor; -

I think that it is only a matter of time...... ;D

    1. Hi Elizabeth! I am hoping a darker color on the chairs will make them look a little softer too.... and I wanted some more pattern and color in that room. It is the "plainest" room in the kit, so it is begging for details! As for the "tea" ... it comes with the kit!!! LOL! I will try to add a few of my own "extras" but we shall see... I do have a few ideas! LOL!

  10. Hi, Betsy - I just cannot imagine my fingers and my eyes ever cooperating with me if I should try to build anything as tiny as the teensy tiny creations that you construct so beautifully. I love this room and all the bitsy pieces of furniture. The parlor stove, as you observed, does look amazingly realistic; and yes, I think those wing chairs are softening even as we watch! What a fun project - as with all your creations, I'm looking forward to seeing more.

    1. Hi Marjorie! It is really hard to imagine adding anything until you are working in this scale... and then you start to think of things that might work... It is amazing how one's perception adjusts... suddenly there is extra space within a sixteenth of an inch! LOL!

  11. They look good Betsy! I think you should feel good about adding your own details. It will make it yours, and you can never have too much detail! I have a little container with my half made Robin Betterly 1:144 furniture shoved on top of my work table in disgust as it was fiddly and the instructions weren't explicit enough, so I commend you on persevering with your table!

    1. Hi Shannon! I am really enjoying the challenge of these tiny kits... even though I found them daunting at first. I think the Christmas House is going to be enchanting when done! And I just can't help making changes in the kits....! :)

  12. I'm still grinning about Pepper's "in progress drawer"... - Chapeau to you for achieving so much; I mean it: These tiny bits are very time consuming and I really admire you for not giving up on that table. I once put together a rocking chair in 1:48 and this drove me almost crazy, when I fixed one part the former one dropped off (always the best way to put me into a very grumpy mood and to test my repertoire of curses). I can hardly imagine to assemble such a table in 1:144... *gulp* Luckily I can sit comfortably in front of my monitor and watch you making an excellent job at it. I'm really looking forward to your next progress and I hope it will include many, many, MANY variations because there's nothing like a good dose of Betsy touch!

    Hugs

  13. Dear Birgit, I am really glad you enjoy seeing the "variations" I make from the originals! I just can't help myself.... something happens and I have to see if my idea will work....! LOL! I think I fall under the magical enchantment of minuteness! I am sure I will end up with an entire world in this scale..... and it will all fit somewhere in the regular 1:12 mini Worlds......! :)
