January Dreaming.....

Looking Back.... Looking Forward....

I have to admit, Dear Readers, that January brings with it the inevitable urge to assess the progress, or lack of progress, made during the past year on any of many "in work" projects. And when I review last year's accomplishments in my mini worlds, the list is small! That might be in part due to the fact that I worked on the Secret Christmas House kits for much of the year..... and the results are Tiny! In a "regular" size dollhouse I would feel I had accomplished a great deal if I had built, decorated furnished and accessorized an entire house! But in this case... it is all so small it hardly seems to count! Not to mention that it is Not quite Done! In the above picture (taken back in November) you can see the "shell" of the house with the morning sunlight streaming in the windows (a rare thing at this time of year!) and illuminating the interior of the rooms before the furniture was added.

I love that you can see right into the tiny rooms
as if they were much larger than they are!
But the chief thing I want to point out is that there is still No Snow
adorning the exterior of the house!
Lots of lovely icicles but no snow!

Yes, I have been avoiding this step....
intimidated by the types of artificial snow and how to apply them......!
I need to do some test samples to get familiar with the materials!
And because it is snowing right now in my RL world,
and might snow all night and most of tomorrow...
I might have a Snow Day to stay home and play with ... snow!

My lack of significant progress on any of my larger projects can really only be ascribed to my lack of focus.... (we won't mention the broken arm). I made a little progress on painting  the Castle Hall ceiling.... but didn't come near finishing it. I made a little progress on the Cloud Palace Roof... but didn't make any progress on the exterior walls... which need tons of egg-carton rocks. I made a little progress on the Gypsy Wagon interiors and windows, but didn't even get as far as attaching the walls to the base!

I made a little progress in the Attic of the Lovely Old Dollhouse....
but didn't even get the new knee-walls painted!
There was No progress at all in the chapel...

Even though Father Alban has been on the brink
of an inspirational breakthrough... for ages!

No progress at all on the Tree House....
waiting patiently for the next floor to be worked on...

(I know, you can barely see it behind the lamp.... I can't find the better pics!)

But it is the Willowcrest, Also known as Hardwick Hall,
that has been calling to me recently!

In particular, all the places on the exterior walls where the tabs show through...
making me decide that I must add clapboards to the exterior to cover them up!

Like right there above the bottom trim..... it's driving me nuts!

And all the corners on the dormers in the attic....
absolutely need covering up!
But then I have to admit, Dear Readers,
that before I can add the clapboards....
I must complete the wiring of all the lights....
Yes, I tried so hard to run all their wires down
through the center wall behind the fireplaces....

Except for the bathroom.......

Which has no wiring at all so far.....
and the middle wall is the one beside the tub....
not really where the lights would be placed!
Not to mention the other side of the kitchen....
which right now only has the overhead light....

Shouldn't there also be a light over the sink?
Which means running the wires down the outside of the wall....
And even in the attic..... there should be a couple more lights....

On the outside walls...
Which means running the wires down the outside walls...!
I guess it's Time to go back to the Drawing Board
with the layout of the wiring!
Not to mention the interior trim needed to cover
all those not very appealing corners on the dormers!

And the design for the cupola which brings light into the top floor....
and the chimney re-design since the kit placement was so not acceptable!
And speaking of little bits of trim needed in odd places....

The bay window in the living room has gaps between the panels....
where daylight shows through!
I filled the cracks with 1/8 inch square strips...

The clapboards will run between the strips....
I just need to decide how I am making the clapboards!
I bought some of the pre-formed basswood panels,
but don't like the way they would need to join at the ends
 and overlap their sections.....

At least the strips have covered the gaps in the panels!
(But I still need to add the exterior window muntins too!)
So which comes first...
completing the interiors with all the wiring
so I can cover the exterior walls...
or just getting the wires in place....
for all the remaining lights...
and decorate later....

And surely, the oven should have a light too?
I guess I have a whole lot of re-thinking to do with this house!
But that's what January Dreams are for Dear Readers,
Looking back so we can look ahead!

(And I did finish the Christmas Card!
But I don't want to show it here until
it has arrived at my family's homes.
I will show it next week!)

Christmas Comes.....!

What Did Christmas Bring....?

As is so often the case, Dear Readers, whether you are Ready or Not... Christmas comes! And it is sometimes in that un-readiness that we find the greatest gifts! So this Christmas morning, in My un-readiness, I almost didn't have a look around to see what Christmas had brought! But I noticed that the Sun had come for breakfast in the Cloud Palace and Hamish Harry and Lady Lavender were just waiting for the others to join them. Where were the others? Well, it seems that Sweet Pea and Brother Beorn were admiring the newest Plants in the Cloud Palace Garden.....

They have found a Pair of Perfectly Snow-Powdered Pines for their garden!
And they even have Christmas Lights amongst the boughs!

Now they can't wait for the night to come so they can see the glowing lights!

As for Blue and Sir Orion, well, they are so Happy
all by themselves on top of the Lookout Tower
that they sometimes Forget to come down at all!
(Love will do that ....)

Since I saw that the Bearys in the Cloud Palace
were all having a Wonderful Morning,
I thought I would check in on all the other Little People too...!

It seems that Presents were delivered at the Shabby Sister House....
Even though Chip's parents seem rather worn out with the waiting!

And Sally May is still busily cooking in the kitchen!
(Christmas does bring a Lot of That!)
Annabelle says "Mama, can I have another cookie...?"
(She is still young enough that she doesn't know What to expect!)

And in the Lovely Old Dollhouse.....
There are presents under the Tree.....

Although they are not all there yet to open the gifts...
Helen had forgotten to wrap something, Charles explains.
She'll be down in a minute...

But Helen can't find any wrapping paper left....
maybe That was what she forgot to get when shopping!
She will just have to use the beautiful bag for wrapping....
But she had hoped to keep the bag for herself...!
Well, a Gift is a Gift.... she would have to share....
(Christmas Does bring some of that!)

Meanwhile, in the kitchen....

Victor and Joanna were eyeing the pie.....
Wondering if they could have Pie for Breakfast...
even Before the Christmas Dinner!!!
But I think they know that they can only do that
when they are at their own home!
They will have to wait patiently for the Feast!
(Christmas does bring lots of that!)

There is even a Large present at The Folly....
but Will is not sure how it got there!
He has been Pet-sitting for some friends.
"Lassie" reminds him a little too much of a certain other
curly Red-haired Lassie that he would like to forget...!
(Yes, sometimes Christmas brings that too...)

There are even gifts under the Grand Tree in the Castle Great Hall.....
Even though I have No idea who they are for...
nor Which era is Holding the Party...

And even in the Chapel....
Ages and Ages ago....
Father Alban has spent the Night in a Prayer Vigil.
And with the Dawn of Christmas he has Found a Great Gift....

He has found his Faith....
In the unknown outcomes....
In the process of just Beginning...
He will overcome his fear and vanity!

He will paint again!
He has found his Faith!
(Yes, Christmas brings some of that too!)

And when the Night comes at Last....

And all the Presents have been opened and all the Feasts have been eaten...
Surely, the Lights shining in the Darkness will still bring you Joy!

Yes, Dear Readers, as we All know,
Ready or Not, Christmas comes!
I hope your Christmas has brought you and your Loved ones
Love, Beauty, Peace, Plenty, Charity, Faith and Joy!

Who Knew....?

A Fairy's Tale Prelude.....

Sometimes the Story Begins in the Middle, Dear Readers, Especially when the Beginnings are shrouded in Mystery and long forgetfulness, and so much Time has gone missing, that None or Few can remember where to Begin! Such was the case in the Dark Evenings as the Wizard sought for a clue to the Whereabouts of the Key of Time! Perhaps there are some of you who remember that he gave it to the Young Lad Peregrine, so he could use it to find his Sisters the Little Dreamers who were lost Somewhere deep in the folds of Time. And perhaps you remember that Peregrine Lost the Key when the sly dragon Slitherwing dropped him on the Distant Briar Moors and he hit his head hard enough to forget many things that it would have been better had he remembered! And perhaps you might recall that the Key of Time was found not long after by a tiny Fairy who was riding his Racing Snail across the Moors....

He was ever so pleased with his shiny silver Treasure....
and he carried it off.....
To Nobody knows where!
And In case you didn't already know, the Fairies have
No Use Whatsoever for the Key of Time!
They live such long and Enchanted lives,
nobody really ever knows how old they are!
They come and go through the Ages as they will....
Appearing and Disappearing, seeming Invisible...
Because they have no Care for Time,
and so they Never Keep Time!
But just because they have no Use for it,
does Not mean they cannot Make Mischief With it!
They have practically No Responsibilities
and so their chief Aim in Life is Amusement.
And because they are so easily bored,
Their greatest Pleasure is in Making Mischief!
And in case you hadn't guessed......
One of the Fairies who was Particularly bored
had spotted an opportunity to make some Grand Mischief!

This Puckish fellow had been Amusing himself
by playing tricks on the residents of the Castle....
(chiefly by moving things they had put down.)
And one day he wandered into the Chapel...
Where Father Alban was trying to decide how to Begin
with making a copy of the Book left by the Lord of the Castle.

It was a Beautiful and Rare Tome filled with Illuminations....
The Prayers written in a beautiful hand and the
Initials worked with pictures of a beauty he had rarely seen.
He felt inadequate to the task of copying such a work!
And that was why the Mischievous Fairy could
so easily Whisper in his ear....

"I know where there is a better book to copy...." he suggested.
"It would be much easier and faster to draw....." he added,
"and yet it would inspire all who saw it to marvel at your Mastery...!"
"It is sitting by the Window in the Lord's Counsel Chamber.....
"What harm is there in at least Looking at it...? he teased.

So Father Alban found himself
placing the Holy Book carefully back in its chest.

And moving slowly, as if in a Trance....

He went to the Counsel Chamber to look for the Book.....
The Lord had not been in residence for quite some Time,
so Father Alban was not surprised to find the Chamber empty.
Except for a few Owls.

He found the book.....
And carried it back to the Chapel.

It was Large, old and Well made.
The cover was green and appeared to be made of the hide of some beast.
But there was no Inscription on the outside at all...
And it was Heavy..... much heavier than he had thought it would be.
He opened it to look at the pages within....

Every page was covered in Intricate lettering and Brilliant color...

He Turned the pages, squinting to try and make out some of the Text....
"To Invoke the Power of Three..." he murmured aloud.
"To Move Ahead In Time...."
He turned another page...
"To Bind..." and another page...
"Truth Spell...."

And suddenly it dawned on him that the Book he held.....
Was Not a Holy Book at all.....
But was a Book of Forbidden Knowledge.....!
He was appalled and Ashamed that
the Evil Spirit had so easily snared him!

There was only One thing to do with Works such as This!

He carried the Tome down to the cellars...

And marched right into the Kitchen

And straight to the hearth....

And threw the Book into the Fire!

And watched the Flames begin to burn the pages!
Ah, Dear Readers, Do you have Any idea
how much Mischief a Fairy can Make?
Father Alban did not Know that the Book
he threw in the fire would Not be Destroyed!

But Old Meg knew!
She knew Exactly how much Trouble this Night's Mischief would Bring....
And it was only the beginning of this Fairy's Tale......!

To Be Continued......
