And More Snow.....

Marching On....

I spent a good bit of Time, Dear Readers, adding more snow to the branches of the Lilac shrub. Above you can see it in the glaring light with all the branches at least "dusted" with snow. It is very slow and persnickety work! Those twigs are very skinny and flexible and the "snow" just doesn't want to stick to them! It is important that the snow only stick in places where gravity would naturally collect it.... and the slanted stems are difficult to coat in the right places. I thought I had made pretty good progress, and maybe even had added enough snow... until I tested it in The Folly Garden again.

It hardly looks like I added any at all!
This is probably because most of what I added was on the twigs...
and when seen from the under side, you don't see the snow.

I tried to take a picture looking down from above...
but the camera wouldn't focus well...
The snow just doesn't show up very well.

I tried taking a picture in the Morning light...
it is a little more visible here...

Daylight does seem to make a difference!

And looking down form above...
(I know, it is hard to focus!)
But is it enough, Dear Readers?
Especially in light of the example set by Mother Nature last night.....

A March snowstorm.....
begun after bedtime, done by dawn......

Wet enough to stick to everything.....
No wind to speak of....

Look at the "hat" on that little garden light!

And the "pile" on the delicate rail of the gate!
I think Mother Nature was trying to show me how it's done!

And meanwhile,
the only other thing I got done was the blossom...

Number Forty-six completed!
I will be making them all as individuals from now on,
not adding them to the already finished stems,
because not every blossom on a shrub is a "double" one.

Here it is in the box...
(with the other singles in the left hand corner.)

Well, Dear Readers, It will probably have to keep on "snowing"
for a while until I get the desired effect on the shrub.
But Time is moving quickly on....
and Spring is right around the corner!
I had better get a March on!

Snow.....

Winter Woes....

From the Beginning, Dear Readers, I have been planning to include Snow on one of my Winter lilac shrubs. Because I live in the North, and Some amount of snow is inevitable at some time during the long six months of Winter at these latitudes. I am sure that if you know snow the way I do... a deep acquaintance for all of my life.... you will know that there is no such thing as just plain snow! There is light fluffy snow, heavy wet snow, icy pellet snow, perfect snowflake snow, sleety mixed snow, crusty corn snow, sugar snow, concrete ice snow and so on. Some snow sticks to everything, and some just blows away or melts the minute it touches anything. So when it comes to adding "snow" to one of my lilac shrubs, I realized I was going to have to decide what kind of snow I was making in order to get it to look right. If I was trying to make heavy wet snow, it would need to bend all those branches.... if it was going to be just a dusting of snow.... it would not lie smoothly along the branches.... and maybe would not stick to the stems either. Could I make it somewhere in between? And could I find the right kind of "snow"?  I tested a number of different "snow" products and was not entirely satisfied with any of them. But before I even got to the snow, I needed to add some of those "suckers" I had mentioned in a previous post. If you look closely at the above picture, you will see four (only four for now!) additional skinny stems at the base of the lilac. I added the buds too. And then it was time to get brave and make snow!

I am using DecoArt Snow Tex....
It is not very easy to apply!
It has to be dabbed on and doesn't stick right away
(sort of like real snow!)
But once it sticks and dries it is solidly attached.
I tried to build it up from the bottom....
working up the main stems....
Imagining where it would land....
I am not done yet, it is a slow process!

I needed to test it in The Folly Garden....
Parts of the shrub are under the roof overhang
and would not get as much snow...
only of it was blowing in as it fell.....
(I apologize for the poor lighting... night has fallen in RL)

But if it is snowing...
we need to make it look like it is snowing!
(Another thing I didn't think of....
what the "blanket" of snow would look like
 next to the snowy shrub....)

Especially if you were trying to look closely....!
(Perhaps I can find better "snow blankets" for the rest of the landscape...)

And certainly, I didn't even finish adding the snow to the branches.....
(I had to go make dinner.... the Vacation Time was all run out!)

And if your Winter is anything like our Winter this year, Dear Readers,
you will have seen plenty of snowstorms which end with sleet and rain...
making a serious concrete-ice mess!
(Not very pretty to copy in miniature.)

So It's not perfect... but it is a start!

Oh, and I almost forgot to show you blossom number Forty-five!
(Or is it Forty-six?!!)

And here it is in the box with the rest of them!

Well, Dear Readers, Winter in The Folly Garden
may not be going quite as I planned....
But that's often the Way of Snow.....
A Slippery cold frozen Beautiful Mess!
Winter Woes are here...

Winter....

It's Been Snowing....

Winter has been Relentless lately in my Neck o' the Woods, Dear Readers, with one storm after another Roaring through and dumping freezing rain, ice, sleet and snow in great quantity! Every couple of days it seems we are being bombarded with more snow and fierce winds! It makes it very challenging just to get to work and back, as I have a drive of over thirty miles each way and my workplace is up in the Hills to the North of where I live. Yes, the Groundhog said six more weeks of Winter.... and so far we have made it through one of them! It snowed all day yesterday and part of the night, and we woke to a Winter wonderland with snow coating everything and piled deep on the ground! Twelve more inches on top of the nine we got on Thursday on top of the four we got on Tuesday....

Yes, that is my RL garden underneath all that snow!

Is it any wonder that I don't want to have anything more to do with snow?
Not even to decorate the Secret Christmas House
with a layer of glittery artificial snow?

Well, I pulled out my faithful scraps of the "Christmas" snow
that is supposed to be used in Christmas village set-ups....
and quickly added some to the Secret Christmas House....
but it is not the permanent decoration for this kit.
I have bought several different kinds of "fake" snow for this project,
but I have yet to get the courage to Apply it to the House!
It seems so irrevocable! I don't want to mess it up!
I think I need to do some "practice" samples
to get the feel for how it goes on.
And somehow, rather that testing the snow, Dear Readers,
I found myself digging out another small kit I had bought
several years ago at the Sturbridge Fair....
A kit for a Tiny 144th scale Garden....!
It is made by Ginger Landon Siegel
and has all the materials you need to put together
a mini tea party in a Garden....!

There is a tiny patio area on a base...
with greenery on all sides....

And a tiny wall with a fountain niche....

Cut from printed paper that you must carefully layer
and adorn with sand to resemble stone....

And almost before I could blink.....

Halcyon came to have a look!
It seems I am not the only one dreaming of Tea in the Garden!

She can just imagine....
but where are the tables....?
Well, there are still many parts to construct
before we get to the Tea!

Starting with the hedges which flank the fountain.....

And adding rocks which surround a little pond....

Adding the painted "water"....
(And discovering that the sample fake water provided
in the kit was too old and dried out to use....)
So I attempted to use a layer of clear gel glue instead.
It doesn't really work...

It just looks like a layer of dried glue.
I will have to try to fix that.....!
There are still all the tables and chairs to construct,
potted flowers and little trays of tea and snacks...
not to mention some "ladies" to dress....
(really just paper dolls with clothes...)
And the ever present temptation to go beyond the kit
and add a tree or two... or a Pavilion....
or more lawn and flower strewn borders....
the possibilities are boundless!

So, No, Dear Readers, I was not playing with the snow....
I was far Far away in a Tiny Garden!

Even though Winter doesn't stop....
We're supposed to get even more on Wednesday!
Yes, It's been Snowing!

Dreaming Of A White Christmas....

Let It Snow....!

It has Snowed quite a bit in my Neighborhood, Dear Readers, piling up 5 inches last Monday and 8 more on Saturday. I didn't need to go anywhere on Saturday, which made it fun to watch the white stuff pile up in the yard! Above you can see my RL back yard... through my dirty windows... because I had no desire to venture out in the cold (18 degrees F) having spent Friday working in a VERY cold Office because our heat system had failed. Last year we had a very mild winter with almost no snow at all... it seems we are off on the other foot this year with  much more normal wintry weather! So while I was home and watching the snow fall outside, and was trying to get some work done on my Christmas Card, I thought I would see whether snow was arriving anywhere else in the neighborhood...

Lo and Behold.... not far away....
 practically right at my elbow....
a gentle snow had fallen...!

I glanced over my shoulder,
and saw that Hardwick Hall was piled high.....
Somebody would need to shovel all those steps.....!

And around the corner....
at the Conservatory.... it was even deeper!
Fortunately, someone had thought to move
the Secret Christmas House indoors!

But nobody was around....
the walks were not shoveled....

It was getting dark and felt like
maybe it would even snow some more.....!

And over at The Folly....
someone had left a light on in the Little Glass House....
it was nearly dark now!

The lights cast beautiful shadows on the glittering snow....!

But even when the lights are turned off....
there is a beautiful brilliance to snow at night....!

Especially with the added glow of Christmas Lights
Here at dusk in my RL Garden!

Well, Dear Readers, I really am
trying to work on my Christmas Card!
It will not be done on time this year,
but I am finally making some good progress,
so rest assured there WILL be a Christmas Card!
And while I am drawing,
I will be Dreaming.....
And it looks like we will have a White Christmas!
Let It Snow!

Snow Day!

Time Out For Play.....

It's been Snowing a Lot in my Neck o' the Woods, Dear Readers, and it doesn't look as though it is going to stop any time soon! In fact, today was Groundhog Day, the Day on which a Groundhog comes out of his burrow and forecasts the remaining length of Winter. "Punxatawney Phil" claims there will be six More weeks of the cold stuff....and Frankly, I believe him! Because it was snowing hard this morning, with enough snow on the roads that I stayed home from work, and it snowed all day. We got about 12 inches of the stuff, on top of the four we got last Thursday, on top of the six we got last Tuesday.... and you get the picture! And it has been so cold that none of it is melting either.
So there was Nothing to do but Play at home today!

All that snow has really been piling up!
The Conservatory is half buried in the white stuff...

And the Folly too!

Oh look! It seems as though the Groundhogs
are not the only ones up and about today!
Anna Maria and Samuel Whiskers have come out to see the snow...

Anna Maria thinks it would be fun to build a Snow Rat....

Samuel Whiskers gets started right away!

Anna Maria wishes she had a better bonnet for hers.

It seems as though Samuel Whiskers has finished another one too!

I wonder what he's thinking....?

But it was so cold outside, Dear Readers, that it wasn't long before
Anna Maria and Samuel Whiskers went back inside
to the warm kitchen of the Tree house.

And speaking of inside....
Maybe we should have a look inside the Conservatory...

To check on the seeds we planted....
Not so long ago!

It seems nobody has shoveled the path.....
But please do come in!

Oh look! Something has sprouted!

Goodness.... that was fast!

Just look how Vigorous they are!
They will need re-potting in no time!

But for now we will keep their cover on.....
It is a bit chilly in here.....
And it is forecast to get Very cold tonight!
Such a good thing we checked!

Well.... look who is here....?
Where do you think you are going...?
Surely, Not inside! That would be the death of you!

"Did you see where Red went... ?" asks Mistress Blue.
"No idea..." replies Master Green.

Even Will decided to come out to see how much snow had fallen...

He wasn't prepared for quite so much snow!
And he wasn't really looking forward to all that shoveling....

Well, Dear Readers, I hope you have enjoyed
coming here and playing in the Snow Today!
I was going to show you more,
but it seems that Blogger is tired...
And it didn't even have to Shovel any Snow!
