Snowdrops....

The First Arrivals.....

Some of you, Dear Readers, may have seen your Snowdrops come and go weeks and weeks before now, but here in the North we are finally seeing them poke their heads out of the frozen earth! They are nearly always the first flowers to emerge in the Spring... their tiny white blossoms sometimes nearly hidden by the still snowy ground.... barely visible unless you know where to look and are watching for them. I have long intended that there be a clump of them under the lilac shrub, and have to admit I was running out of Time to get them made! Last weekend was the first real opportunity to clear last year's leaves from my RL garden, and so I suddenly found myself behind on my production schedule. But rest assured, I finished the lilac blossom number Fifty-one!

And here it is in the nearly full box!

I can't tell you how excited this makes me!

And another boring batch of ten leafy branches done!
But would there be time to make a bunch of snowdrops?
And could I even find the right sized punches in my tool box?

I had to try, even though I knew I needed to be out in my RL Garden too.
Above you can see the beginnings...
painting a crescent of green on the inner petal tips,
and dipping the green thread into yellow paint for the stamens.
The last time I had made snowdrops, (several years ago)
I thought they had ended up a tiny bit too large for true 1/12 scale,
so this time I started with a smaller punch.

Here I am slowly gluing the inner petals to the threads.

Here the three inner petals are all added.

I used a ball stylus to cup the outer petals
before separating them and attaching them to the flower stem.

Adding the petals one at a time....
it is a slow process because you need to wait
for the glue to dry between each petal.

Here you can see all the petals have been attached.
But then, Dear Readers, I truly had to go out to my RL garden....
and when I was done out there I was Exhausted!

So the beads for the tops of the blossoms were added later.
And I really wasn't sure I could finish the snowdrops this week.
But I tried anyway... painting a tiny bit of paper
for the "hoods" at the tops of the stems...

They have stripes painted on the outer side,
and tonal shading on the inner side...
not that anybody will be able to see the inner side when it is attached.....
(but I will know it is there!)

The hoods get folded around the top of the stem
where the blossom joins the thicker stem
 (already glued together here).

Here all the stems have their hoods attached.
The blossom emerges from this hood as the flower blooms.

And adding a pair of strappy leaves to each stem.
In RL, these leaves are a bit thick...
and I have not been able to make them appear that way in mini.
And I was rushing to try and get these done...
to see how they would look in the Folly Garden...
 tucked under the Lilac shrub...

I only got four completed before it was late and I was tired.

But here they are!

Nodding their little heads...
(it just reminds me how many details are still needed here...
those bricks need dirt and aging....
there needs to be some moss....
the lilac suckers are still not done.....)
But the snowdrops don't care!
They have arrived, and that means
it is truly Spring in the North!

It sure is challenging to get good pictures of these little guys!
And tonight, Dear Readers,
I added a couple more blossoms...
because that clump was too sparse.

And there are still one or two more buds to add....
But I am running a little behind schedule here.....
Spring has arrived.... the Snowdrops are in bloom!

New Year

Happy Wishes.....

Well, Dear Readers, Another year has almost gone.... Where Did it Go??? And What did I get done this year? These are questions I have been pondering recently, and I have No answer for Where it went! As for What got done.... the answer is Not Much in the way of building or making minis! But in retrospect, I think I will have to declare it the "Year of The Cloud Palace!" Between the arrival of three new Fairy Bear residents last Winter, necessitating the construction of an additional Tower for the Palace, and then the arrival in the Summer of the Visiting Fairy Bears who were on their way to my sister's Hope Cottage, it seems as though the Fairy Bears and the Cloud Palace Adventures filled nearly all the blog and Mini-making Time! And what Adventures they were! (Let me assure you that this is not a bad thing!) And along the way there were a few delightful creations....

Like the Cloud bed for Sweet Pea which is tucked into the gable of the Cloud Palace....

And the one for Blue in the Lookout Tower.....
(Alas, Lady Lavender's is still not finished...)

And the Kitchen got an additional oven
so that Hamish Harry could bake delicacies for the Bearys.
As well as being stocked with some essentials!
The Guard Tower itself is still far from finished!

As for Other Projects.....
The Willowcrest saw a burst of effort on the windows
early in the Summer.....
but still is waiting for a great many details to be done
before I can even attach the walls!

This picture is from before the windows were glued in....
but the house is "assembled" but not glued together!

And The Castle Great Hall Ceiling
got a tiny bit of painting added in the Summer...

Starting the border with the everyday people below the Saints....
But that seems to have been the last work done on the Castle Hall!
Still a Long way from finished....
Oh, those Patient, patient Saints!

And Waaayyy back in the Spring there was a flurry of tiny flowers...
Really Really Tiny flowers.... and not many of them either!

Like this Squill that popped up in the cracks beside the Conservatory...

And the snowdrops too!
But I did not get any more work done on the Conservatory foundation.
And Nothing at all got done on Rose Thorne Cottage or The Folly....
or the Tree House!
Could it Really be a whole year and more since I worked on the Tree House?
(I am really wanting to continue with the Tree House!)

So, Dear Readers, I Wish to get more Construction done this year!

I don't know how I will accomplish that...
but I am Hoping that I will be a little more organized....
and a little less distracted by RL challenges!
Maybe I will even make better progress with the Stories
that you are so Patiently waiting for...
Daphne and Renee have So much to say!

But Before I leave you, Dear Readers,
I Wish to show you my Christmas Card for this year....
(Mom, don't look if your card has not arrived yet!)

It took a great many hours of painting!
It is watercolor and pen and ink.
The size is 8 and 1/2 inches by 11 inches.
It is a memory of a Christmas from my childhood,
surrounded by vignettes from the current year
inside the letter "U" which makes the frame.
Remember to poke the picture to see it larger!
I Wish it was not so Late in being finished....!
So Dear Readers, With that I close another year
and Wish you All
a Wonderful and Happy and Productive New Year!

Such A Tiny Thing

The Snowdrop in Bloom....

Spring is Arriving in my neighborhood At Last, Dear Readers! And here that means lots of mud and dead leaves from last year, and if you look very closely into the places where the snow has melted... you might spot the tiniest flowers starting to bloom. The first and bravest is the snowdrop.... it will even push its way up through the melting snow! And its tiny white tear-drop petals are so easy to miss, hiding amid the debris of fading winter. But if you know where to look, they are a joyful sight, the Overture to Spring!

Here, I will show you a tiny clump just starting in my RL garden!
At my Old house I had huge clumps of snowdrops, but I moved to my current house in the Fall, and forgot to bring a clump of snowdrops with me to the new garden. I mentioned this last year to a co-worker, and she brought me a clump from her Mother's garden! So now I have snowdrops beginning to bloom....
So I couldn't resist trying to make some for my mini garden too!

Did you spot them there... in the debris by the door?
They aren't very big so they are easy to miss!

And it is even more difficult to get a good photo of them....!

I made them from pieces cut from a small flower punched paper...
And I forgot to take pictures of all the steps....
Gluing the petals to thread....
adding a bead and painting it.....
Gluing the thread to a wire stem......

And at this point I was Sure they were going to be too big...
Giant Snowdrops at the very least!
But I cut back the stem.... and "planted" them in the "earth"....

Which is a scrap of pink builders foam painted brown.
I used the rough cut side for the ground surface....
poked random holes and pushed the stems in with glue.

Maybe they aren't too big after all!
So I needed to try them out with a "setting".....
and where better than the Conservatory, Dear Readers?

Ah! They do look sweet!
But something is missing!
The Dead remains of winter are missing!
So I went out and harvested twigs and dead leaves from my garden!

And carefully added them to the "earth" around the blossoms....

And the wind blew them around the courtyard by the doors....

Where, if you aren't looking carefully, Dear Readers,
You might not notice such a Tiny Thing
as a Snowdrop in bloom!
