The Nativity....

 Lest We Forget....

Is it Already Almost Christmas, Dear Readers? How does the Time pass so quickly and at the same time seem to crawl along? Well, I suppose that is a question that always stumps the Philosophers themselves, so we are unlikely to find a good reason on our own! But never mind, however the Time passes, Pass it does, and here we are almost late to set up the Nativities! Pollyanna has declared it time for the Holy Family to find their way to the Lowly Inn that has no room left to host them and hence they must bide with the beasts themselves in the stables. At least that was a roof over their heads and straw at their feet rather than nothing but Stars and wind above and rocks underfoot. They were grateful for somewhere sheltered to lay their heads.

"I think this is ready" said Pollyanna at last.
She had moved and shuffled the characters into
several arrangements before settling on this one.
(There is always the concern of the best placement for the camel!)
Oh, can't you see the camel...?
He is over in the back behind Mary....

Can you see his nose sticking out
from behind Mary... way in the back......?
No?
(I'm not sure we should tell Pollyanna....!)

"I think it looks perfect, my dear!" said Charles happily.
(He can see the camel from where he stands...)
"Now we are truly ready for Christmas whether it snows or not!" he declared.

Yes, I think it looks right, thought Pollyanna....
wondering idly why there was no stable with this creche.
Would it make the pieces easier to place if there was one she wondered?

Just then Arthur showed up to check on how the arranging was going...
"Looks good, Hon" he said, "But where's the camel...?" he added

"Can't you see him?" asked Pollyanna, surprised.
"He's right over there behind Mary....
with the Kings which only makes sense..." she added."

"Oh, sure, I see him now", said Arthur peeking around Mary
"but it looks a bit like he's hiding back there".... he added honestly.
"Well, I can't put him in front of the Kings..." said Pollyanna,
"that just doesn't look right... as if the camel is first in line....!" she declared.
"Ah, I do see what you mean," said Arthur diplomatically.

"But I have wondered why there is no stable with this creche..." said Pollyanna.
"I wonder if it would make fitting the characters easier....?"
"I think it would be lovely to have a stable again..." said Helen wistfully.
"There was one originally but it was a bit fragile
and fell apart... I can't remember how long ago!"

Pollyanna glanced over at Arthur and could see
he was thinking the same thing she was...
"We could build something...." he said quietly...
"not for this year.... but maybe by next year...?"
'Pollyanna just smiled her happiest smile...!

Meanwhile, Dear Readers, over at The Folly Dollhouse
there are no such questions and no such discussions.
There is no need for them at all.
Will and Gabrielle are in Perfect Agreement every year
that the tiny Nativity goes in the window
of the Living Room just as it always has!

Yes, it is already evening (since it arrives so early these days)
but they are enjoying their coffee and bread and cheese
by the light of the fire and the little glowing ceramic Christmas Tree.
There is nothing to argue about,
the Holy Family alone with the angel above...
anything more is superfluous and distracting even!
This is Christmas at it's most elemental.
Family, shelter and Blessings from above!

Who need ask for more?

Well, Dear Readers, I hope that as the Day approaches
you are able to celebrate with Family and loved ones.
And that whatever Holiday you celebrate,
that you have shelter and Blessings from above!

Happy Holidays To All!

Thanksgiving....

Giving Thanks.....

It Is that Time of year, Dear Readers, when Americans gather with Loved Ones to celebrate the Holiday of "Thanksgiving". It is a Feast whose menu has only small variations across the entire continent, for the most part centered around a Roast Turkey, many varieties of vegetable dishes and Pies for dessert. Of course, there are variations, but the History of the Holiday is rooted in a celebration held by the earliest European Colonists (also called settlers) who were mostly here because of religious persecution in their home lands in Europe. This feast supposedly took place in Massachusetts Colony in the early 1620's after they had survived a year in the New Land. The local Indigenous People ("Native Americans") as opposed to the immigrant Europeans, had come to help these new people and had been instrumental in their survival. The settlers were Thankful. And the local large bird, the Wild Turkey figured big in the feasting, along with corn (maize), beans, squash, potatoes and cranberries, all of these being native to the Americas and plentiful in the area. It was a Time when the support of the community and the assistance of neighbors made a real difference to survival. And meanwhile, in the current times, in The Lovely Old Dollhouse Victor and Joanna have been baking the pies ahead of time to make room for the rest of the baking on Thanksgiving Day. Victor is playing "Chef" this year and is heading to the Farmers market for fresh vegetables.

Meanwhile over at Sally May and Chip's house, The "Shabby Sister House"
Sally May is baking cookies to bring to the celebration.

"Daddy is cooking this year" she tells Chip as he comes
to see if there are any cookies to snack on yet.
"And he says there's no need to bring anything
 but ourselves and an appetite!"
"So, I guess there will be plenty of cookies for later..." says Chip...
sort of hoping for one now.
"Yes", agrees Sally May, "but we are not going to ruin our appetites!"
she said sternly, knowing Annabelle was listening to every word!

And Victor has returned from the Farmer's Market
with a basket full of squash and onions and potatoes.

"I'll help you peel those potatoes" says Joanna cheerfully.
"I was hoping you would" replied Victor with a wink.
"Oh, and I ran into Old Eddie", he added
"and we got to chatting. You remember him, don't you?"
"Of course I do!"declared Joanna. "How is he?"
"Well," said Victor. "he's been having a hard time lately...
he has no family around here... so I told him to join us for dinner.
We have plenty to go around, after all!"

And in the Living Room, Charles is warning Helen
that it will be a bigger group than usual celebrating the meal.
"It seems that Victor has invited an old acquaintance
to join us for dinner he says" cheerfully.
"Do you remember Old Eddie, my Dear?" he asks.
"We haven't seen him in a long time..." said Helen.
"I do hope he is alright!"
"Well, Victor thinks he is a bit lonely without family," said Charles,
carefully not mentioning the real issues.
"And don't forget we have Cousin Kitty
staying with us too," added Helen anxiously.

It seems Cousin Kitty had recently lost her
housing subsidy benefits and was camping on
the nearest couch she could find in the crisis.
At the moment that was the bench in the upstairs hallway
with her seven cats!

Pollyanna and Arthur were in their favorite hiding spot...
the attic "studio" where Pollyanna sometimes worked on
the Miniature projects she had started so enthusiastically a while ago,
but mostly spent time Daydreaming.
Arthur could easily keep her company while
accomplishing much on his laptop computer.
"It's starting to smell divine..." said Arthur of the
cooking aromas that wafted up to them eventually.
"Yes, Daddy's cooking and he knows
what he is doing!" agreed Pollyanna.
"But I think I just heard someone arriving already.." she added,
"but it sounds too quiet to be Sally May's folks!"
"We can go down and find out..." said Arthur restlessly.

Old Eddie had arrived and stepped inside quietly,
not quite sure what to do next.

But Charles had heard his arrival and went
to greet him and help him feel welcome.

Charles brought Eddie into the Living Room
 and introduced him to Helen.
And Pollyanna and Arthur joined them moments later.
The topic of conversation was mostly the weather conditions
and the hopes that it would not snow too soon!

Not long after Sally May and Chip and Annabelle
and Chip's parents Ernie and Blanche
 all arrived with cheerful greetings.
"Here we are at last..." called Sally May
as she headed to the kitchen.

"And you know I can never come empty handed...!" she declared.
"I have brought a fruit basket to add to the pies!"

Victor and Joanna were just deciding that everything was ready
and they should call everybody in.
"I hope there's enough..." said Joanna....
"Of course there's enough!" declared Victor.
"That's a 23 lb. Turkey!"

"You are so thoughtful, darling..." said Joanna
as Sally May put the basket in the middle of the table.
"That is just exactly what this meal was missing!"
declared Victor giving his daughter a big smile.

Within minutes, the room was filling with the rest of the family,
lured by the delicious aromas and the commotion of the latest arrivals.

"But where is Cousin Kitty....?" asked Helen, looking around
and not seeing her in the crowd.
"She is feeling shy, Grandma..." said Pollyanna.
"We passed her on the way down...
she said she will eat 'when the dust settles'" she added.
"I think she is afraid the cats will climb on the table,"
 said Pollyanna smiling.
"I'll take a plate up to her," she added quietly.

Charles cleared his throat to get the attention of everyone.
"I always feel so Blessed to have my Family all so near to me,
and so I can only imagine the situation being the reverse.
But for many, what family they have are far away or no longer with us,
and at times of celebration that can only deepen their feelings of loss and loneliness.
But truly, we are all Humans together in this World,
and if we look back far enough we all descend from the same Family Tree.
My hope and prayer is that we all learn to share and give love
to all the people of our "Family Tree"
no matter how far or near they are to this branch of the tree.
I humbly give thanks that you are all here
 to share this Feast.
Let us eat!"
"Hear Hear!" called Victor as he cut the first slices of Turkey.
 "Pass the plates..." said Ernie....
"Let me ladle that gravy" said Sally May...

Well, Dear Readers, I hope, wherever you are
and however far or near to Family you are,
that you can take a few minutes to Give Thanks
for the Greater Human Family to which we all belong.
And perhaps pass along some cheer or assistance
to those nearest whether you know them or not!
We are all part of the same family in the end.

Happy Thanksgiving!

And The Nativity....

You Know How It Goes...

Well, Dear Readers, I don't know where the Time has flown off to, but here we are suddenly almost at Christmas... and I am never quite ready! When last we peeked into The Folly Living Room to see Gabrielle's new Lighted Tree, it was too gloomy and dark to be able to see the Nativity she had set up in the window sill. It is much brighter today, but still a little dark for photos... but never mind... we have seen it before, this simple gathering of Mary Joseph and the Child with an Angel hovering overhead. It is just perfect in it's simplicity.... for who else was there when the babe was born that Dark midwinter night? And even though we have not Quite arrived to that moment this year... we still can treasure the Story we know so well. And if you were passing by from outside in that Wintry Wonderland, you could just spot it if you glanced the right way...

along with the glowing fire in the hearth and Gabrielle's little tree!

And Meanwhile, over at The Lovely Old Dollhouse,
Pollyanna has remembered to set up the family Nativity
in it's spot on the sideboard in the living room.

As we know, it is always
a little bit of a Last Minute Thing...
After all, Mary could not predict
when exactly the babe would arrive.
And Pollyanna would not have her sitting
 waiting week after week...!
And suddenly it is here...
Time draws short....
all the players have been assembled...
"It looks lovely as always, Dear" says Helen happily.
"I think it looks so peaceful...." added Charles.

"Hmmm...." said Pollyanna, not quite sure she agreed.
"I am not sure the camel should be over here..." she added,
pointing to the right side of the arrangement.
"But it never seems to fit on the other side with the Kings...!"

"Well..." said Helen..."maybe the Kings and the Camel
should just arrive later.... they didn't actually arrive
until Twelve days later, after all!" she added.

Just then Arthur looked into the room...
"Ah, I see you have assembled the Nativity!" he said.

"But.... " said Pollyanna...
"I am just not sure the camel should sit over here...
when the Kings are all over there..." she said
pointing to the other end of the sideboard.
"Ah.... I see what you mean...." said Arthur diplomatically.

"Perhaps he is just happier over here
with the other ruminants?" he added tactfully.
"Well.... I suppose there is that...."
said Pollyanna thoughtfully.
"I still think it looks so peaceful as it is..." declared Charles!
"Well..." said Pollyanna...
"I suppose it will have to do!"

"We can't, after all... actually ask the camel...!" she muttered.

"But I do think he looks happy over here..."
she added, smiling at Arthur.

Well, Dear Readers, You know how it goes...
The Nativity is always a last minute thing...
and the camel is notoriously difficult to order about...
But the Eve will come and the Babe will be born
and the World keeps spinning on!

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate and
Happy Holidays to those who celebrate other traditions.

(And I could almost swear I saw the camel wink at Arthur!)

Enchantment....

 In The Air...

It had Not been a Lovely Autumn, Dear Readers, Not at All! On the Contrary, it had been endlessly gloomy wet and stormy. One storm barely subsided before another took over the heavens, the leaden sky advancing relentlessly and unleashing torrents of rain, day after day! Is it any wonder then, that at the very first moment the sky seemed to lighten, Tommy was off on his pony Prince and riding across the meadows, the freedom of fresh air and the open spaces filling his heart with joy? He could not remember the last time it had been a sunny day!

And even though it was not exactly sunny now,
he could feel the excitement of being free to go where he wished!

And as I am sure you can Imagine,
there were few places he wished to go more than the Castle ruins,
the place of Dreams and Adventures dear to the heart of any young boy.

And today he had managed to elude his pesky younger sister
who always wanted to follow him!
He would have the whole afternoon to himself!

Or so he thought!
It had not been long after he left that Beatrice noticed he had gone.
She knew he would head for the Castle,
he always headed for the Castle...

She had followed him there before....

It was a long walk....
but she knew the way!

And you Might be surprised that their sister Caroline
had noticed they were gone and was determined to find them!
She was very annoyed that Tommy had let Beatrice go with him!
He knew they were not supposed to play in the Castle ruins,
and it was very likely going to rain again before long!
Their cook, Mrs. Butterworth, said she could feel it in her Bones.

Their dog, Snowy, rushed up to join her as she was leaving,
and she was  very happy to have his company.

It was a long walk, and Snowy would be able to follow their scent.

And Believe it or Not, Dear Readers,
they were not the only ones heeding the call to go outdoors
the minute the rain paused as if to catch its breath!
Over at The Lovely Old Dollhouse,
Arthur and Pollyanna were feeling
the tempting whispers of Freedom beckoning,
and decided to take a walk late in the afternoon...

It had turned chilly,
so Pollyanna grabbed her new woolen cloak.
"Are you ready?", asked Arthur.
"Am I ever!" declared Pollyanna.

"Look how many leaves have fallen!"said Pollyanna as she stepped out the door.

"Well, it is about Time" declared Arthur....
"It is almost Halloween!" he added.

"Gosh, you're right," said Pollyanna, surprised,
"I've been so busy just wanting the rain to go away...
I think I forgot that Time was passing!"

"I'll have to get the decorations out" she added...
"maybe we can even carve some pumpkins!"

"Let's not forget to buy the candy...." added Arthur.

"I'm sure there will be a few Trick-or-Treaters out this year!"

"Well, I know 'Somebody" will eat the candy..." said Pollyanna
"even if there are no Trick-or-Treaters" she added with a smile.

"Who,.... Me?" said Arthur incredulously.
"I only eat the Leftovers!" he declared.
"Well, I know it disappears awfully fast...." Said Pollyanna.

"Well,...." said Arthur..."Never until after the Castle Party is over!"

"Which reminds me....." said Pollyanna,
"We need to choose our costumes too!"
"I think I'll be a Wizard again..." said Arthur smiling...

And not long after in the Lovely Old Dollhouse Kitchen
Victor and Joanna were debating the same thing.

"What do you plan to wear for the Costume Party...?" asks Victor.
"I don't know," admits Joanna.
"Maybe a Gypsy.... or a Witch..." she says.

"I think you should be 'Maid Marion' ...." says Victor.
"I like being 'Robin Hood'...." he adds.
"But I'll be what ever you want....!" he says loyally.

And in the Living Room,
 Helen and Charles are debating
whether or not to go to the Party this year.

"Do you think it will be safe to go....?" asks Helen a little anxiously.

"Well, my Dear..." says Charles thoughtfully...
"I think it will be as safe as anything ever will be...."
"After all, we are all vaccinated...
and if you are worried we can always wear masks..." he added.

"We could even go as bandits!" he added cheerily
"I think it will be fun!" he declared.

But back at the Castle, Dear Readers,
the Wizard had been pondering the approach of All Hallows Eve...
and he was not so sure it would all be fun and games!
He could feel in his Bones the swirling mists
of Enchantment that surrounded the Castle....
It was the Time of Year that the Dark grew stronger...
and the Spirits were abroad....
There was No telling which way the Winds would blow....
and there was Enchantment in the very Air.....!

( To be continued......)
