Thanksgiving....

 Almost Late to Dinner...

You may recall, Dear Readers, many other Thanksgiving Dinners at the Lovely Old Dollhouse, all with the same dinner and the same guests and very little variation! But I beg your patience with this Tradition that comes around, ready or not, and needs it's moment of glory. This year Helen was astonished to realize that dinner was going to be late. Quite late, in fact! "Goodness!" she declared to Charles. "Look how dark it is already... and Sally May hasn't even arrived yet!" she added anxiously. "Do you suppose something is wrong?" "No! Don't worry!" declared Charles, knowing that Helen would worry no matter what. "It's just that Chip had a late job he had to finish, and Annabelle was napping, so they are running a little late." "But they should be here any minute!" he added. "But what about the dinner...?" said Helen, starting to fret. "Won't the Turkey be over-done?" she added. "Joanna assured me she was able to put off the schedule a little bit." he said. "It sure smells good!" he added.

Meanwhile, up in the attic, Pollyanna and Arthur
were keeping "out of the way" of the kitchen.
They knew that too many cooks spoiled the broth!
But even so, the aromas had reached up to the attic.
"Do you think it's ready yet?" asked Arthur. (He was hungry!)
"I think they will call us when it is time." said Pollyanna.
"But it sure smells good!" She added.
"I haven't heard Sally May and Chip arrive yet either."

And down in the kitchen, Joanna and Victor
were just taking the Turkey out of the oven.
It looked like everything was ready... except that
Sally May and Chip and Annabelle still hadn't arrived!

But just then they heard a commotion in the Front Hall.
The puppies were greeting Annabelle and making a great noise!

Sally May and Annabelle headed straight for the kitchen.
"I'm sorry we are so late..." she said. "Annabelle just woke up!"
"And Chip had to finish that job...."she added.
"But let me help you get everything ready!" she declared happily.

"Sorry we are so late!" Chip was saying to Helen and Charles.
"Are your folks coming too?" asked Helen.
"They said they would be right behind us!" declared Chip.
"It sure smells good!" he added cheerfully.

Meanwhile, up in the attic, the noise of the arrivals was unmistakable.
"I think we should go down now..." said Pollyanna.
"We don't want to be Late!" said Arthur grinning.

And sure enough, Ernie and Blanche, Chip's parents,
 arrived a few minutes later.
Everyone was gathered in the kitchen at last!
"The Turkey looks wonderful, Dear!" said Helen to Joanna.
"And smells even better!" added Charles!

Well, you know what happens next, Dear Readers!
Yep, its the same menu as always!
Roast Turkey, Mashed potatoes, Butternut squash,
cranberry jelly and gravy... oh, and buttered peas too.
And for dessert Apple and Pumpkin pies!

And did you know, Dear Readers,
all those foods, with the exception of the apples and peas,
are Native to the American continents.
A fitting celebration of the bountiful Harvests of this Land!
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful day,
whether you are Giving Thanks or not!

Happy (almost late!) Thanksgiving!

Giving Thanks....

Anyway.....

I Hope you will Understand, Dear Readers, that Thanksgiving is different this year. The pandemic has made it risky to gather... even with your loved ones, for any length of time indoors. Pollyanna had received a recorded phone message sent out by the Governor of the State saying all groups of more than ten were banned from gathering indoors! She went right to Helen with the news, because with all of them together they were eleven. Six at the Lovely Old Dollhouse, and five at Sally May and Chip's because his parents had pretty much moved in with them last summer.

"We can't all get together this year" she says to Helen.

"But what will we do..." she asks...
 "What will they do"?

"Who will cook the Turkey...?" she adds.
"We will have too much food!"

Victor and Joanna were in the kitchen discussing that very question.
"I am sure we can do a great job..." said Victor cheerfully.

"I'll start on the squash..." he added.
"You can get the bird in the oven.
Don't worry, I'll help! " he said happily.

"Good thing we baked the pies here last night....
that's the important part!"... he joked.

Pollyanna and Arthur decided the help by "staying out of the way"
otherwise known as hiding in Pollyanna's craft room in the attic.
I really need to organize things better in here thinks Pollyanna.
I just don't have the right storage spaces.

Meanwhile, Dear Readers, the problem over at Sally May and Chips house
is that the neighborhood got a little crowded last Spring when the pandemic started.

This is the place where I "work from home"....
And I will be mostly working from home again starting next week.
Our school is done for the Fall term and will
open again in February if all goes well.
I will be going in to the school office two days a week
since we do have to keep things running anyway.
But you can understand that Sally May feels a little "out of sorts".

Even with the neighboring equipment temporarily moved....
it is dark and empty feeling in the dining room where they usually gather.
She wishes she could celebrate with Her family!
Chip's family are fine... she loves them too... but it is not the same.
And they have been here all year.
She is tired and a bit depressed.
She almost doesn't want to cook!
They won't have a turkey since it is being cooked
over at the Lovely Old Dollhouse.

Chip will keep his folks entertained...
even though the house is dark and a bit cold.
One of these days he is going to have to fix that window!

Meanwhile, Joanna and Victor have cooked the feast!
"I think it is time to call everybody in" says Joanna.

"It's time to eat..." she tells Helen and Charles.

"This smells wonderful...!" says Charles.
"And it looks delicious too!" he adds.
"Well done, my dear".... he says to Joanna.

"Goodness! What a Huge bird!" says Helen.
"We will be feasting for weeks!"

"Oh, I Wish everybody could be here!" says Helen
for at least the dozenth time this day.
"But at least we know they are all safe and well..." says Charles.
That is the most important thing!
"And I am sure Sally May has cooked up a feast too..." adds Pollyanna.
"She is so good at that! We know they are not starving!"
"And we will call them when we are done says Victor."

"Let's all hold hands for the Grace now" says Charles.
And they bow their heads in silence ....
there is much to be thankful for.

And over at Sally May's she is
putting the finishing touches on their meal.
She has baked a chicken instead of the turkey
and also roasted some Venison that Chip's folks
brought as their "contribution" to the menu.

"I think it is as ready as it is going to be..." she sighs.
"It smells yummy Mummy!" says Annabelle excitedly.

"And I helped... didn't I!" she adds.
"You were a Big help" said Sally May.
"I could not have done it without you!"
"I think it is time to call the others in" she added.

"Now that looks like the kind of dinner
that makes the menfolk happy!" declares Blanche.
"Ah... we do have a lot to be thankful for!" agrees Ernie.

"Thanks, Babe..." says Chip. "I know it is hard for you not seeing your folks" he adds.
Sally May suddenly is reminded how much she does have to be Thankful for.
"Who will say Grace...?" she asks.
"Grace" shouts  Annabelle excitedly and everybody laughs.
Ernie sings the doxology and they serve the feast.
They do have so much to be thankful for!

Meanwhile, Honey and Oreo
are keeping an eye on things in the kitchen...
there are no pies.
Sally May had made a beautiful cake that she planned
to bring to The Lovely Old Dollhouse gathering.
"Are we 'guarding'...." thinks Oreo....
"or just 'watching'?"
Honey doesn't even bother to answer him.
She is trying not to drool at the thought of crumbs on plates.

Well, Dear Readers, it seems that
 Nothing is Normal this year!
But I am Giving Thanks anyway.
I do have so much to be thankful for!
And I hope you all are celebrating safely
Wherever you are!

A Time To Gather.....

And A Time To Feast.....

I am Sure that Many of you, Dear Readers, will not be surprised to find that the Family is Gathering at Sally May and Chip's house for Thanksgiving dinner. It is something of a Tradition because Sally May loves to cook and their house is large enough to hold everybody comfortably, even though a few of the windows are still needing replacing. (Chip is working on it!) We will not count how many Times the same meal has been brought out and the same folks have gathered because Thanksgiving is an Ageless Tradition. Whoever it was who First decided to give thanks for a good harvest and bountiful meals has long been lost to time. But it is certain that people have been celebrating their Harvests and Giving Thanks for their blessings for as long as people can remember.

And as you might imagine, the gentlemen of the Family
have gathered in the living room for drinks and snacks...
(they are Not turning on the TV)

while the Ladies of the Family have rushed to the kitchen
to help Sally May finish preparing the meal.
It is tradition, after all!

Arthur is so devoted to Pollyanna
that he is asking if she needs any help...
She assures him she has things under control.....

So Arthur joins the Guys in the living room.
Chip's Mother, Blanche, has a sore ankle
so she is excused from the kitchen...
and is helping the Guys keep
 the conversation interesting.

Joanna and Sally May are admiring the Turkey
which has just come out of the oven...
It is Huge and smells delicious!

Helen is arranging the tableware,
while Pollyanna and Joanna begin to carry in the dishes...
It is the same menu every year and always has been....

Sally May carries in the Turkey...
Are they forgetting anything...?

"I'm hungry" declares Annabelle..... "when can I eat?"
"We're almost ready..." replies Helen.....
"Is it Time to call in the Gentlemen?"

They all Gather around the table...

Chip is ready to begin carving the turkey...
but first he asks his Father to say the Grace...

They all hold hands and repeat the blessing.....
and then they fill their plates.

Meanwhile in the kitchen,
the dogs are "guarding" the dessert...

"Do you think they would notice one little nibble...?" thinks Oreo.....

"You have so much to learn..." sighs Honey.

Well, Dear Readers, I am sure
you will think you have been here before...
witnessing this same ritual...
And probably you are right!
For the Time to Gather and Give Thanks is upon us...
I hope you all are surrounded by those you Love
and that your Feast is Bountiful!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving....

A Family Affair......

Sally May was Upset, Dear Readers, because the weather forecast was for bitter Cold temperatures to arrive for Thanksgiving. Sally May loved to cook and was always happiest when she shared with her whole family, and Thanksgiving was such a family affair, it was her favorite Holiday! But this year it seemed as though it would be impossible to host the family at her home. This was due to the windows in several rooms still not having been fixed!

"I'm really sorry Hon," said Chip.
"The materials I had on order didn't arrive...."
"I could stretch some plastic over them
in the meantime...." he added apologetically.

"That won't be good enough..." said Sally May, annoyed.
"We can't have the Grandparents over to sit in such Cold!"
"Oh, and that reminds me" added Chip,
"My folks decided to stay home and tend the fires.
They're worried the pipes will freeze if they are gone too long."
"I guess I'll call Mama and tell her
we can't have everybody here...." said Sally May.

As soon as Joanna heard from Sally May, she went to find Helen.
"Sally May and Chip will not be able to host the Dinner..." she said.
"Their windows are still not fixed and it will be much too cold over there."

"We can all eat over her this year...." said Helen....
"Do we have the supplies...?" She added.
"We'll need to get the turkey in the oven right away!

"I'll run to the market... " said Charles.

"I'll clean the kitchen"... said Victor,
"I know my way around the sink!"

Before long the table was cleaner than it had been in a long time!

Joanna got started with peeling the squash and potatoes....

Helen joined her as soon as she had finished her row of knitting....
(she didn't want to drop a stitch!)
"Let me start making the stuffing..." she said.

By the time Sally May and Chip
 and Annabelle arrived,
the Turkey was stuffed and in the oven.

Chip and Annabelle joined Charles in the Living Room.
They knew better than to try and be in the kitchen!

Sally May didn't want to be anywhere but the kitchen....
"Tell me what needs to be done..." she said as she arrived.
"I guess I will go see if Charles needs anything..."
 said Victor, making his escape.

Charles and Chip were still just saying hello...
Victor knew just how they were feeling....
 being an in-law himself...
It was best to leave the ladies to the kitchen
 when they got started cooking!
Chip was wishing he could find a TV somewhere....
this was the only house he'd ever known that had no TV!

Eventually Helen came in to let them know the food was ready....!
But where was Pollyanna?
And Arthur?

Well, Dear Readers, Pollyanna was playing
 in her attic hideaway....
and Arthur may have been napping!

"Did you hear someone calling..." she said?
"Maybe we should go down now....
I can smell the turkey from here" said Arthur!

"Have we got everything..." said Sally May?
"I think so... " said Joanna....
"We can put the pies in to warm later."

"It sure smells good in here..." said Pollyanna....

"Wow!" said Victor.... "what a great bird!"

"I want some Turkey..... " said Annabelle excitedly!

"First we say Grace, darling..." said Helen.
Charles cleared his throat and said the Blessing...
"May we all give Thanks for the great blessing
 of the Bounty before us...
And may we never forget the Great Blessing
of a Wonderful Family to share it with!"
"Amen!" said Victor.
"I will carve..." he added happily!

Well, Dear Readers, I hope you all
 have a Wonderful Thanksgiving!
And whether you are sharing it
Early or Late, with Few or Many...
I hope yours will be a Family Affair!

And I would like to add that I am Very Thankful
for the Great Blogland Family of miniaturists out there
All You who share so much with so many....
In a "Little" way, it touches me deeply!

Happy Thanksgiving!
