Thrifts and Gifts

High and Dry In The Desert.....

I could not help but Wonder, Dear Readers, how a tiny sailboat came to be resting in the Desert Mountains of Southwestern New Mexico, where water is scarce, rivers are small and sporadic, and the very air pulls moisture from your skin! But there it was, on the shelf in the back room of the Thrift Shop where my Mother volunteers, and the minute I saw it I knew it had to come home with me. I could not promise it the wide Oceans, but I could imagine it on the shores of a gentle stream.... or fishing on a pond... or the shores of a lake... so many possibilities to Dream of, and all so tricky to build in miniature! Perhaps I felt a kindred spirit, having spent so much time in my youth sailing small boats and frolicking in the sea.... I always feel a little high and dry in the Desert lands! So it came home with me!  And that was not the only Treasure I found on my Travels.... there were several other small items in the Thrift Shop.....

The most noticeable being the bright red basket Baby Carriage
which is actually a Christmas ornament!
And the cutest being the goggle-eyed Pup made from seashells......

Or maybe the flocked Moose key-ring.....
And the black Fraidy-cat!

But that was just the beginning, Dear Readers,
because I was also Given a whole pile of Gifts
by a friend of my Mother's who used to make
miniature dolls a number of years ago and had
a whole collection of supplies to donate to me!

Everything from wooden horses and Christmas trees.....

To buckles and tiny buttons....

To a hand made hobby horse....

and a collection of old metal Monopoly pieces!

Not to mention a Beautiful little Native American ceramic pot.....

And a gorgeous Guatamalan woven piece of cloth!
What a Treasure Trove of gifts!
Thank you Sarah!
I will have a lot of fun playing with these!

And once I was back home, Dear Readers,
you can imagine how eager I was
to visit all my projects with "New" eyes...
a fresh perspective .... a renewed eagerness...

And with little time and even less effort.....
Brought water to the Folly Glass House....

Pieces that have been waiting for ages.....
and "say" so much!

And with the first frost of the season last night,
it might be time to turn up the heat in the Glass House...
So the plants won't freeze!
(Every Glass house needs a good thermometer!)

Well, Dear Readers, I had a Wonderful visit with Family
and safe travels there and back again.
And Between the Thrifts and the Gifts
I am not at all High and Dry,
But enriched with Treasured memories
and renewed Spirit!

  2. What a lovely post, Betsy. It was so interesting to hear how your trip went and see the gifts you received. I can't believe you've had your first frost already! Mind you, it is getting much colder in the evenings here too so I expect it won't be too long until we get ours.

    1. Hi Sheila! I love that hose too! It has been waiting... but those darn bricks took Forever to make! LOL! It is fun to have the parts finally coming together... even if there still is an awful lot to get done! But that is the fun part! :)

  5. Hi Betsy, glad to hear you've had vacation and you've had a wonderful, good time! What lovely gifts and findings. I'm sure that all of them contain/will tell a new miniature story, I can feel it ;)!! I especially LOVE the water hose with a puddle of water, it's a nice addition for your conservatory.
I can't believe that you've had your first frost already.....here, in The Netherlands, we have drought, totally no rain since weeks, with temperatures around 20-25oC, that's much too hot for 'our' September.
Good to see you back into the blog world, I've missed you ;)!
    Warm hugs, Ilona

    1. Hi Ilona! I had a wonderful time with my family, and it is good to be back with my minis! The hose is one of those details that makes such a difference... I have been waiting to use it for a long time!
And the nights are getting quite cool here now.... It is already time for me to start planning my Christmas Card! LOL!

  6. How lovely to visit the little bits that came home with you! Treasures all. Maybe the sailboat can brave the mighty Connecticut River! Here in the dessert it's another gorgeous morning, a sliver of moon in the dawn, with pink clouds as the sun works on rising and a promise of rain later in the day. We miss you and we love our new cabinets!

  8. Hi, Betsy - You did come home with some interesting new acquisitions. That's a beautiful little sailboat. I'm happy that you had a good visit and safe travel. I appreciated your reference to the "high and dry" conditions in the southwest, because I was on a Nebraska "Junk Jaunt" last weekend and came across a miniature southwest style basket filled with oysters! Go figure! That came home with me, but what I'll do with it is a mystery.
I love the way you've brought water to the glass house - those perfect pieces do say so much!

    1. Hi Marjorie! That is a strange idea... oysters in a desert style basket! But perhaps the basket traveled far.... and met with oysters at the shore!
I am so glad I took the minute necessary to install the water.... it really adds so much to the place! I tend to put off adding the "finishing touches" until all the other parts are finished... (because I might have to keep removing them) but I couldn't wait! LOL!

  9. Although I was born in the sailing capital of the world I have no personal connection to sailing... but I really enjoy looking at sailing boats whether in reality or in miniature, especially when they're as lovely as yours. What a find... you did well to rescue it out of the desert. And your other findings are also gorgeous - I too would never been able to go out of this store without taking this little moose along with me. About your gifts - that lady spoiled you for sure... so many fantastic treasures with so many possibilities. Great to hear you're home again after a fantastic trip and family fun with new fresh energy to go back to your projects, your newest additions make me shout for more, more, MORE!!! ;O)

    1. Dear Birgit, I am overwhelmed with the MORE I came home with! LOL! So many possibilities... so little Time! Don't I have a few unfinished stories with significant cliffs hanging out there already? I am resolved to put the boat aside.... for a rainy day perhaps? LOL! Or at least until I can start my beach-house project..... Shhhh... don't tell anybody... because I have no room for new projects! :)

    1. Hi Veronique! Yes, I do feel lucky! I always have my eyes wide open for minis when traveling to new places.... but I did find more wonderful treasures than I ever expected! And who would have imagined a trip to the deserts would find me a boat? And such a lovely one in near perfect scale too! All it needs is a beach...... ! :)
